Rant: My kids are terrible about taking care of their stuff. I warn them all the time not to leave their stuff around. Weve been lucky in that the neighbors bring their stuff home for them. My kids live charmed lives, I swear. But, eventually, theyll be taken advantage of and Im trying to raise them to be aware of that, but keep their mostly trusting personalities. I know women who raise their kids locked up at home and tell them constantly that the world is out to get/harm them. I cant see doing that to a kid. Yet stranger danger is real, of course. Im struggling with trying to find a middle road with my kids. Right now they are way too trusting of everyone. They expect people, complete strangers, to give them stuff all the time because that is how they have been treated so far. I try to tell them the treatment is not usual and to view such things as unexpected gifts and not how people usually are. As my son gets older and loses his cuteness, he is not getting the same attention and free stuff that his sister still gets. He gets frustrated now when he doesnt get the treatment and free stuff he once enjoyed. It is hard to teach them some people can and are mean when they havent experienced it yet. When it does happen, Im afraid it will be devastating for them. So all I can do is warn them, repeatedly, that, eventually, their stuff will be stolen or someone will be outright mean to them (and I dont mean fellow 1st grader mean). Im just waiting for it to happen and hope I can deal with the fall out. On a side note, STOP giving kids candy! At least ask the parents first before you offer anything to children not your own. Ive had people give my kids candy, toys, balloons, food in general, and even money. Just ask first, ok? I dont want to rain on your random act of kindness, or anything, but you are inadvertently making things more difficult. Especially the candy. I dont want my kids eating sweets all the time, ok?
