Rather than worry about what will happen, I feel that now is the time to break our dependence on the OPEC cartel. We have a great opportunity to wean ourselves from being known as “The Saudi Arabia of natural gas.” We already have a well-established chemical commodity that is not some R & D idea that will cost billions of dollars in funding. It has already passed the test of time and it can free America’s dependence on foreign oil. Right now we have an annual production capacity of nearly 33 billion gallons, selling recently at $1.50 a gallon. I am talking about using Methanol as the alternative fuel source that will end the stranglehold from the Cartel. A dollar of methanol can take us 30% further down the road than can a dollar of gasoline and at current prices there is a competitive edge. In contrast to gasoline which can only be made from oil, methanol has vast amounts of resources. Any carbon containing material including natural gas, coal, garbage or any kind of biomass is capable conversion. America has a huge advantage in coal reserves to include an enormous agricultural resource that we can harness to supplement and fully replace foreign oil dependency. The use of our resources cannot be restricted by any actions of OPEC. The environmental advantage alone should have the EPA working vigorously on making the use of methanol happen. It burns cleaner and is safer and if a crash were to occur, a fire is less likely to happen than with gasoline. The fumes do not have the airborne carcinogens which harms the public health like gasoline vapors. The hundreds of billions of dollars we pay OPEC could be redirected to American businesses who can produce the fuel right here at home creating millions of new jobs. Our automobiles can easily be converted for the use of methanol. Most cars sold in the United States already come equipped with chrome fuel lines and computers that make them capable of using methanol instead of gasoline. With the right software and methanol impervious seals, every new car can be flexible enough to run on ethanol, gasoline or methanol. UNFORTUNATELY, the biggest U.S. car companies are aligned with OPEC and not with the automakers or customers. It is unlikely that they would consider anything that would cripple the cartel. I mentioned the EPA earlier, how they should consider this idea, unfortunately the Environmental Protection Agency makes it “unlawful for any manufacturer of any fuel or fuel additive to first introduce into commerce, or to increase the concentration in use of, any fuel or fuel additive” with an oxygen content above 2.7 percent by weight. Since methanol is 50 percent oxygen by weight, the EPA’s interpretation means that pure methanol cannot be sold in significant quantities as a fuel for motor vehicles. That is just another ridiculous ploy which prevents us from becoming a successful fuel producing country. They would rather fight for the continued use of foreign oil and continue the increase cost of gasoline with mandated fuel additives than argue in favor of methanol. Methanol will decrease the smog that has a major impact on public health. The EPA is not concerned with the environment as they profess otherwise the restrictions would be waived due to the proven environmental advantages methanol has over the use of gasoline. If we used methanol, owners of older cars would benefit as well for the price of gasoline would fall to an affordable rate. By using methanol, any shipments dependent on transportation deliveries would decrease in price as well. The supermarkets, auto stores, furniture warehouses, restaurants just consider the price decreases in almost all aspects of the American culture and the number of unemployed finally becoming once again independent from government subsidies. I strongly feel the need to rethink the strategy of price wars artificially created by OPEC versus our ingenuity that can become the nail in a cartel coffin.
