Real transformation can never be effectively achieved using old established companies with established traditions, state of constitution and peculiarities where race is just but one of the many impediments for outsiders, unless of course you want to wait for 40 years. The biggest challenge is to create brand new opportunities in the next 30 years which will allow the formation of new companies. Why not try and harness this taking cognisance of some of the real talent that has gone through the ropes especially in construction, banking, petroleum and property business? This is what the guys at the DTI/DoE/DPE/DED should be busying themselves with and trying to fashion, less than affirmative action and BEE codes within an old system, my emphasis. I’m against the vigour of affirmative action/BEE codes for these reasons, because you are trying to plead to a tradition (it’s not even about race) that is never going to give you a chance……… not really, new business and new talent doesn’t’ thrive where the cake is already small. The pathfinders will protect it. 20 years is in front of us to see, we need to change focus.
