Recent 5-star rating on TripAdvisor from a very satisfied customer-- with some great tips! We arrived at daybreak in mid-October and walked out to the far observation tower. Wow! Perfect! Hundreds and hundreds of water fowl arriving, settling, then resetting....It was fantastic. Here are a few hints... *Try to arrive just before sunrise..its an easy walk out on the dike and yes you can easily carry a mug or thermos of coffee! Its worth the effort! *There are a few benches but they are damp so either bring a chair or stool or bring something to sit on. Bring binoculars if you can but plenty to see without them. * Do not bring young children. (see below about wildlife hazards) I would say not suitable for kids under 12...maybe 10 if they are genuinely interested. Else, they will get bored and noisy and disrupt the birds. No dogs are allowed, either. *Leave your cell phone in the car, or turn it to airplane mode. There is not much signal here and itll drain your battery struggling to find one. And I promise you if it should ding it will spoil a perfectly magnificent moment just as a great blue heron has launches herself into the air just for you! *If the wind stays up you wont need bug spray. If the wind dies down youll wish you had some...a lot.... *Watch for wildlife..its a wildlife preserve after all...we saw an 8 point buck grazing on the dike as we approached...awesome...Also keep an eye out for snakes...we didnt see any but Im sure this was their domain.... *Be sure to go into the visitors center even if you have a wait around a bit for it to open...its really great...and they have some awesome spotting scopes inside that are amazing...you can see so much with them thru the picture windows in the visitors center overlooking the marsh....I could have used them all day! Have fun and enjoy it all!
