Recently a good friend of mine stayed over for the holidays and on the first night of her stay a group of us sat down to enjoy a lovely home cooked dinner. When I find myself in this situation - enjoying great food and great company - I often feel the need to say thank you. I don’t really know who or what I’m saying thank you to, but sat round the table I just like to acknowledge out loud that Im grateful for this food and for this experience. On this particular occasion I bumbled out a few words of appreciation, people nodded and mumbled, then just as we were about to dive in my friend she’d like to say a few words too. This is what she said: Earth, air, water, fire and space all combined to make this food. Numberless beings gave their lives and labor that we might eat. May we be nourished, that we may nourish life. How perfect.
