Reflections of Nostalgia By: Steven G. - Interior Design Consultant “Soak up the memories with this radical retro design…” When you think of summer time in Northeast Wisconsin, what comes to mind? The feel of warm sand between your toes while sunbathing at Menominee Park Beach? The heat of a night time bonfire while camping at High Cliff State Park? Or maybe reminiscing about last years family fishing trip on Lake Winnebago? Whatever comes to mind, summer is a season of memories...remembering old times spent with family, friends, or maybe relatives who are now long gone. As a dedication to personal memories of summer time during my childhood, I created this super stylish retro design featuring furnishings and accessories from businesses in Northeast Wisconsin. A mid 20th century based design with a punch of modern flavor, anyone in Northeast Wisconsin can incorporate this style into their home or apartment today! Colorful and psychedelic framed art print by Jenn Ski not only acts as a powerful focal point, but is the main inspiration for the colors and style of the design as a whole. With its wavy lines, flowing shapes, and vibrant color, it keeps the mind imagining! I found this larger sized art piece at WG&R Furniture in Oshkosh, and was pleasantly surprised to see it had an affordable price as well. Below this amazing art is a truly unique sofa. I found this retro delight at Atomickatz in Oshkosh, and was instantlyintrigued by its allure. It is a one of a kind piece, with the original white fiberglass base and striped cushions from when it was first made in the 1960s. The cushions are fitted in a diamond like shape underneath, to accommodate its hidden unique shape. With a bit of a story to it, this beauty also sat protected under a sheet for over 35 years untouched...as a result, it is still in near mint condition. And adding a touch of mysteriousness to it, there is no factory or maker name on it anywhere you can see. It reminds me a little of a sofa my grandparents had in their sun room many years ago, but I have never seen anything exactly like it...its maker remains a mystery! Flanking this mystery sofa, is two swivel ottomans and Kichler table lamps. The ottomans are made of black faux leather, smooth and shiny like the fiberglass sofa base, and have a retro style to them as well. They remind me of the black inner tubes I used for swimming in my parents pool during my childhood. I found the table lamps at Valley Lighting in Oshkosh, and fell in love with their simple style and color. Their ceramic yellow bases add a punch of color without overpowering the eyes. They bring memories of the bright summer sun when turned on, glowing gorgeous yellows and whites. For comfort, I added a trio of solid colored pillows on the sofa. Pony Up Red, Cowhide Black, and Sari White, make a train of colors like the trains that ran by my girlfriends house in high school. In their basement they also had an old red and yellow rug that I remember was super soft and plush. To keep your feet comfy and happy like mine were those days, I added a totally radical area rug from Atomickatz in Oshkosh. Colors of summer heat blast away, with outward rays of the sun. Artistic line and shape invade this space with a solo seating area, featuring Le Chaise Chair and Nesting Tables. The ivory Le Chaise Chair flows like a cloud in the summer sky. Light and graceful, it reminds me of the clouds straight up in the sky when I would lay in my parents swimming pool many years ago. Truly a unique shape and design, it is arguably one of the most loved retro chairs in the world. A set of black steel and ivory blue nesting tables reflect the shape of the hole in the Le Chaise Chair perfectly. With their graffiti style plates on top, they make for an artistic and functional place to keep your summer snacks or drinks. For anyone interested in incorporating the colors of this design to their walls or space in their home, I included a scheme of paint colors from Hallman Lindsay Paints as a guide for color selection. They make all their paints in Wisconsin for Wisconsin since 1956. Each color represents a memory from my childhood. “Black Licorice” is black like the night sky. It reflects the pitch black nights during campfires at my parents old cabin up north. “Best Of Summer” is an ivory white, like the blinking stars seen during nights of stargazing during my youth. “Sunny Mood” is an appropriately named yellow for summer. Like the afternoon sun, it reflects bright and energetic color. “Romantic Night” is a dark and luscious red. It reminds me of the heat of campfire flames, and the color of my parents old station wagon. And you can never go wrong with a color named “Cheddar Cheese.” Being a native Wisconsinite, eating cheddar cheese on grilled hamburgers, and having Mertz cheddar cheese on Ritz crackers, was a staple of my childhood cuisine. As a dedication to personal memories of summer time during my childhood, I created this super stylish retro design featuring furnishings and accessories from businesses in Northeast Wisconsin. A mid 20th century based design with a punch of modern flavor, anyone in Northeast Wisconsin can incorporate this style into their home or apartment today. Soak up the memories and enjoy!
