Repsol to look for oil off Spanish isles The Spanish government has given Repsol permission to look for oil 40 miles off the Canary Islands despite opposition by regional authorities and ecologists. The government said that it had issued a “favourable impact statement” and stressed that its decision was backed by “rigorous” scientific research. It is keen to reduce dependence on importing 99.9 per cent of its oil and gas. It also backed a plan to allow Cairn Energy to start prospecting for oil and gas off Ibiza. However, the move has met with opposition from celebrities, including Jade Jagger, Kate Moss and Paris Hilton. Cairn Energy was granted permission to start seismic surveys with a view to start prospecting in the Gulf of Valencia. However, protesters assert that the survey areas are feeding grounds for marine birds and are on the migratory path of the endangered fin whale. Cairn disputes the claims, saying the surveys would have “minimum impact” on marine life.
