Request for honest feedback (positive and/or negative). Here are the current and preliminary thoughts on the three things the Fortes Foundation shall focus on along with where, who, etc. 1) INSPIRE to dream BIG What: Inspire to dream BIG (live presentations and/or online videos) Where: High ranking Brazilian high schools and universities Who: Preferably delivered by an alumnus/na of that institution (if not try to show video of an alumnus/na) How many: Solely dependent on number of volunteers and acceptance by/availability of institutions How: Live presentation (preferably in English), with slides and a video from YouTube. If possible, try to tape the presentation itself and then upload it to YouTube 2) EDUCATE on how to get there What: Written communication Wikipedia style, live mentoring in person/videoconference/phone Where: Online for written communication (Wikipedia itself of wiki technology within yet to be launched Fortes Foundation own website) and in person/videconference/phone in Brazil and/or the U.S. for live mentoring Who: Any volunteered mentor who’s “been there, done that” How many: Solely dependent on supply and demand i.e. number of volunteered mentors and demand by prospective students/interns in the U.S. How: Wikipedia style of written communication and live mentoring 3) CELEBRATE the wins and the losses too What: End of 1st semester (June) and end of year (December) celebrations Where: Anywhere (house, bar, restaurant, school, etc.) Who: Anybody (helped people, helpers, interested/curious people) How many: Solely dependent on supply and demand How: Online invitation, show up, celebrate x-x INSIGHTS (behind the above) on how best to apply the method (including possible solutions in response to common issues): a) Inspire to dream BIG (usually through personal example in the form of live presentations and/or online videos): the first big step towards realizing one’s full potential is to have a BIG dream. Unless one is inspired by some personal example (family, friends, someone famous who touched them in some way), a BIG dream doesn’t necessarily happen naturally nor by itself. As a result, the first step should be to inspire to dream BIG. By virtue of seeing personal examples one can get inspired, excited and also become a believer (by seeing that yes it is possible) b) Educate on how to get there (usually through written communication in a collaborative and always evolving Wikipedia style by those who’ve “been there, done that” and also through personal and live mentoring, be it in person, via videoconference and/or by phone as people like to learn from people). The issue at stake here is that people often don’t know what to do because the information is unavailable, decentralized/fragmented, incorrect, untrustworthy, all of the above, etc. and as a result end up giving up, which is certainly unfortunate (but thankfully fixable). On a side note, part of this “educate” piece also includes how to get funding (be it in the form of a scholarship and/or loan) since that is another common obstacle specifically when it comes to Brazilian students pursuing a top tier education in the U.S. c) Celebrate the wins and the losses too (as they usually contain precious learnings). This is the more subjective and psychological side of the story. Hard working, driven, hungry ambitious people all too often forget to “live life”. That too is a mistake and as such celebrating not only the good but also the bad should become part of the routine. These celebrations can take many forms but the spirit is that they are live, in person and with the clear objective of celebrating. Many T-H-A-N-K-S.
