Research shows that 80% of graduate students in Maths, science and technology, in the USA, are non -Americans, with a huge chunk of these students being from Africa. Americans do not excel in these subjects and this is evidenced by her poor placing in reports by PISA. The irony however, is that the countries where these students come from care less and thats where America throws her bait. The students are promised millions of dollars in research, well paying jobs and a secure future in return for a research that leads to new frontiers. (By the way, though this may or may not relate to the context, of the top Fortune 500 companies, a good percentage were started by immigrants; Google, Yahoo et al. add WhatsApp to the list!). You are free to mention some new innovations by Africans in America or other developed countries. While we want to politick day in and day out on things we do not even have a logical clue on, we must realize that we are losing the opportunity to debate the things that matter for Kenya and to me, education ought to be the priority. Countries that are serious about the future are investing heavily in education. This also means giving sense to education; that its not competition. Ranking students does not add anything other than scaring the neighbors. This should end and be replaced with scholarships and grants to tackle the challenges ahead.
