Retired Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, the ex-military Head of State and defeated presidential candidate of the opposition Congress for Progressive Change in the 2011 general elections, has been in the news again over his reported comments this week declaring that there will be problems in the country if the 2015 elections are rigged. The alarm provoked this week by General Buhari’s alleged remarks can thus be easily understood. Speaking in Hausa, he reportedly told his supporters that “by 2015 they either conduct a free and fair election, or they (will) go (in) a very disgraceful way.” I do not understand Hausa, beyond a mere smattering; so I do not know the exact idiomatic significance of the “baboon” and the “dog” soaking in blood, as used in Buhari’s comment. If the expression is similar in meaning, however, to the pidgin proverb, “Monkey dey work, baboon dey chop,” where baboon stands for the privileged class; and if “dog” stands, in his comment, for the ruling party’s foot soldiers, then the instant outrage the statement has generated in government could be justified. His warning is precisely that the next election should be free and fair, or there would be problems. Culled from the article, Handling a Doomsday Foretold by Dafe Onojovwo. Published 2011 by Daily Independent Newspapers. My Questions: What REALLY is the HINDRANCE in simply CONDUCTING FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS in this country? Why is Nigeria yielding the lead in this regard to other African nations who now enjoy political peace?
