Right now, my only child is probably sitting in her homeroom, anxious and nervous about the rest of her first day of high school. What she doesnt realize yet is that the next few years will bring some of the best memories of her life. My advice to my daughter today is: * Be kind to everyone. Twenty years from now, people will still remember you for the way you treated them. They will totally forget about the brand of clothing you wore or the car you drove. * Work hard and dont be afraid to ask questions if you dont understand something. You will never look stupid seeking knowledge. You only look stupid when you are convinced you know the answer but you dont. * You will have the most fun youve ever had in your life on the band bus driving to away football games. * This is one stage of your life. High school is not meant to last 20 years. Some people never transition from their so-called glory days. The sole purpose of this time in your life is to prepare for the next stage. It will be a lot of work. But in the end, what you give will be equal in measure to what you take away from this experience. * The broccoli cheese soup at DB is amazing (I hope they still fix that. If not, I need to have a talk with Mrs. Obama). * Never let anyone else, or a label, define who you are. You are so much more than a band geek, a nerd, a prep, a dropout. Watch The Breakfast Club for more details. * Enjoy every minute. Four years will go by in the blink of an eye. * Your parents love you very much.
