River Care Code: Avoid disturbing wildlife - refrain from driving in riverbeds, particularly during the breeding season from August to December. River birds nest on the ground, their eggs and chicks are almost impossible to spot from a vehicle. Keep your distance from wildlife. Birds swooping, circling or calling loudly probably have nests nearby. Move away so they can return to them, or their eggs and chicks could die. Make sure your pets keep well clear of birds and other wildlife. A dog running loose can wreak havoc, leave your dog at home or keep it under strict control on a leash. Avoid operating power boats or jet skis near riverbanks and estuary shorelines. Go slow - the speed limit for boats is 5 knots within 200 m of a bank - the wake of a speeding vessel causes erosion and disturbs wildlife. Jet boats can wash away nests near the water’s edge. Exotic weeds and fish are big problem in some waterways, clean your gear and boats before you leave to prevent their spread to new waterways. Teach children to care for nature.
