Robert Coles on Ruby Bridges: youtu.be/XPK3zQM2dHU Ruby Bridges has just turned 60 years old. She famously became the first black child to desegregate an all white school in the American south. The prejudice and disdain that she must have braved is incredible. Yet she managed to do so amicably. She was an unlikely pioneer, much akin to Rosa Parks. One thing I like to take from this, is how racism was considered a norm in the late 50s and 60s - it shows how far we have come. I think everyone, once in a while, should take a moment to rethink their ideology and be objective. There may be a prejudice thought lurking, which in 50 years time might be made redundant, outdated and entirely hurtful. ...And with a little bit of free-thinking you could have been one of the first people to make that change.
