Robertson Road, Eastville - c1912 and 2014 These two views are of Robertson Rd, just up from the White Swan on the corner with Fishponds Rd. Robertson Rd continues up the slope on the right towards Greenbank Cemetery. In the 1912 photo, a mother with her pram inspects the contents of Hooper’s shop window, while another mother and daughter in matching summer outfits, including bonnets, are about to enter. The elegant terrace of double bayed houses has neat front gardens. A tradesman is calling at one of the houses, leaving a bag of feed on the floor for his patient horse. The lamppost in the middle of the road has an unusual, presumably protective, metal surround – could it be an early form of mini-roundabout? Today’s view shows that Hooper’s has gone the way of many corner shops and has been converted to a residence. Several houses have had their double-bays altered, destroying the uniformity seen in the 1912 photo, and as usual the road is lined with parked cars.
