Rooney scores on 100th cap against Slovenia Wayne Rooney admitted it was a special night at Wembley after he marked his 100th England cap with a goal in the 3-1 Euro 2016 qualifier victory over Slovenia. The skipper received his golden cap from Sir Bobby Charlton before the game and was joined by his two sons on the pitch before leading from the front in the Group E encounter. It took a Jordan Henderson own goal, the Liverpool midfielder heading past Joe Hart, to spark a dull affair into life but the response was instant. Rooney drove into the visitors box within seconds and was brought down by Bostjan Cesar after a mazy dribble. Despite Samir Handanovics outstanding record of saving penalties, the United captain thundered the ball home with too much power for the keeper. Former Red Danny Welbeck netted twice to earn three more points for Roy Hodgsons men, the first a scruffy finish but the second was out of the top drawer following a slick one-two with Raheem Sterling. Chris Smalling came off the bench in the closing stages to earn his 14th cap as a replacement for Phil Jagielka. It was a good day in the end, Rooney told ITV. It was tough as they took the lead and we had to show character but it will be good for us. We havent faced that since the World Cup. It was a great reaction from the players to going behind. It really woke us up. I think youre trying to get a yard and get a shot away, he said of the penalty incident. When you dribble in thebox, there is always an opportunity of someone taking you down and the lad clipped my heels as I was about to shoot. It was a clear penalty and great to get a goal so early [after they scored]. Weve got a good winning mentality. Youve seen that after weve gone 1-0 down. We believe were going to win every game. It was a special night for me and a great honour to represent England 100 times with hopefully many more to come. To walk out with my two boys was something nobody can take away from me. England have maximum points after four games and are very much on course to qualify for the finals while Rooney is now joint-third leading marksman for his country, level with Jimmy Greaves on 44 goals. Meanwhile, David De Gea was on the bench in Spains 3-0 win against Belarus and looks set to remain with the squad despite suffering an injury scare in training.
