Rothschild giraffe ~ Endangered The overall population of African giraffes has decreased from about 140,000 to 80,000 (by about 40%) in the last 15 years, according to Dr. Julian Fennessy of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. Their greatest threats are hunting, habitat loss from human expansion, and poaching. They continue to be used for African trophy hunts legally. The subspecies Rothschild giraffe has been Red listed by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) and is considered Endangered. Less than 670 remain in the wild, on protected national parks or privately owned land in Kenya and Uganda. Conservation includes protected national park areas and private land, and captive breeding programs to preserve their DNA.
