Rudy Ray, Commander of the John H. Reagan Camp was contacted and interviewed about the SCV specialty license plates by Channel 7 news out of Tyler. Rudy requested the interview take place at the Confederate Veterans Memorial Plaza in Palestine. -------------------------------------- PALESTINE, TX (KLTV) - The legal battle over the Confederate battle flag license plate is underway in Texas. Attorney General Greg Abbott’s office announced Tuesday that they will be appealing the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal’s decision to allow the image of the Confederate flag to be displayed on Texas license plates. Rudy Ray, commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in Palestine, says the flag is a symbol of their heritage.“We fly it all over the place. Were very proud of it and were very proud of what it means… It represents to us what this country originally represented which was real liberty and a federal constitutional government that limited Washington D.C.,” said Ray. Kenneth Davidson, president of NAACP in Palestine, says the flag is racially offensive and hurtful. “How many back people have been hung under that flag? How many people have died under that flag? I have family members that have died under that flag and burned under that flag so that flag doesn’t mean heritage to me,” he said. Ray says the Confederate flag does not stand for hate. “Nobody here today. I know of nobody and I know of people all over the south that love that flag. I don’t know of anybody that is in support of any kind of slavery in our day,” he said. For Davidson, however, the flag opens old wounds. “The flag is always going to be, going to hold the same thing to most blacks in the United States. We dont care to see the flag,” he said.
