Russia is calling on Japanese businesses to invest in the special Far East economic zones it is planning. The Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East held a briefing for Japanese companies in Vladivostok on Monday. During the session, Deputy Minister of the Ministry Maxim Shereikin said Russia will offer incentives to companies that invest early in the special zones. Russian officials say that companies moving into the new economic zones will be given more preferential taxation treatment than in other areas. They also say they will simplify application procedures and ease regulations. A representative of a Japanese trading house said Russian officials gave them detailed information on taxation and other issues, showing their eagerness to attract investment. The representative said cooperation with Russian businesses will be a key factor for the Japanese companies to advance into the zones. Russian President Vladimir Putin is placing high priority on the development of the Far East region. He has proposed legislation that would set up new special zones in the region early next year. Russia is now considering 14 candidate locations for the zones, including coastal areas and Khabarovsk. Oct. 20, 2014 - Updated 04:22 UTC-7 www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/english/news/20141020_43.html
