Russia to revive its Soviet era song contest over Conchita Wurst win at Eurovision Russia will revive the Cold War era Intervision song contest in October in protest at Austrian drag queen Conchita Wurst’s Eurovision win 30 JULY 2014 | BY ANDREW POTTS Following on to hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics, the Russian coastal city of Sochi will host the 2014 edition of the Soviet era Intervision song contest in October which Russia is reviving in protest at Austrian bearded drag queen Conchita Wurst winning the Eurovision song contest. The contest is open to members of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Shanghai Co-operation Organization and former Soviet Republics including the Baltic states. However so far only China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan have announced they will take part in the event which has not been held since 2008 after a long hiatus after its initial run between 1977 and 1980. Leading voices began calling for Russia to pull out of Eurovision after Wurst’s win with Russian Communist Party deputy Valery Rashkin calling for a ‘family values’ based alternative to the contest to be held. ‘The last Eurovision contests results exhausted our patience,’ Communist Party deputy Valery Rashkin told the Interfax news agency in May. ‘We must leave this competition. We cannot tolerate this endless madness.’ Russia is the first to name their performer for the song contest and have chosen Belarusian-Russian singer Alexander Ivanov to represent them. - See more at: gaystarnews/article/russia-revive-its-soviet-era-song-contest-over-conchita-wurst-win-eurovision300714#sthash.Ef71uWKy.dpuf
