SANCTION: AN - TopicsExpress

SANCTION: AN AUTOANTONYM .................................................. One hundred years back, it was used in positive sense only. It is still used in the same sense as a VERB. The Govt sanctioned a school for my village last year - & - it has been established this year. When sanction is used as a noun - generally in the plural form - it carries NEGATIVE meaning. Diplomatic sanctions have been imposed between the two countries. It does not mean that diplomatic relations have been established - rather - the modern meaning is is that the relations have been done away with. Sanctions carry negative meaning. Diplomatic sanctions have been lifted between the two countries. Sanctions lifted. Negativity removed (LIFTED HAS CHANGED THE SENSE) Relations established. THERE EXISTS A LOT OF CONFUSION IN LITERATURE. SANCTIONS, HOWEVER, STAND FOR NEGATIVITY. (SANCTIONS MAY THEREFORE BE AVOIDED FOR POSITIVITY AS PER MODERN TREND). diplomatic sanctions - removal of diplomatic ties economic sanctions - ban on trade military sanctions - military interventions sports sanctions - preventing people of one country to participate .................................
