SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT It is interesting how a layperson adds an official tittle next to his/her name and suddenly is empowered with a sense on entitlement. The person looks at commercial property and starts thinking what he/she wants to do with the property. I want this. I want that. No clue about business, the wishes of the property owners, the challenges of having vacant space incurring expenses and not generating revenue. They look at the property as if they can dictate how the property should be used. It brings to mind a simple analogy. A homeowner looking across the street to a vacant home in his/her neighborhood, and thinking...uhmm Id like to see a pocket park there. We need more green space. Children and seniors can go there. We can have BBQs. We can get donations for maintenance. We can rent the park for parties. The homeowner with the title forgot one simple fact. He/she doesnt own the property across the street. He/she cant dictate what the property owner should do with his/her vacant home. He/she may have the illusion of having a pocket park across or near his/her home. But it is not up to him/her to decide whats best for the property. More so if they dont have a clue about commercial property management or ownership. A reality check is in order. A title may empower a person to think of changes. But it has to be based in reality. Otherwise, it will soon lose ground and credibility at the negotiation table.
