****SIWES Discussed**** For those who have constantly asked me when the yearly four months Students Industrial Experience Scheme(SIWES) would start, this may interests you. After necessary findings conducted, it becomes important to put some things straight for the benefit of those that do not know. Traditionally, students from Schools/Faculties of Communication, Engineering, Enviromental and Sciences are to proceed on a four month Industrial attachment albeit upon completion of their second semester ND 1 examination. SIWES, a FOUR UNIT COURSE recognized by National Board for Technical Education(NBTE). And being one of the requirement for the award of National Diploma for all Science based/Practical courses/disciplines in MAPOLY, it becomes imperative that any student who wishes to graduate from the above stated schools or faculties, MUST go for this programme. This years programme has been scheduled to start in this month of November, till February next year. Now that the Academic activities has been paralyzed due to the industrial actions embarked upon by our Lecturers for about a month now which has disrupted the second semester exams earlier scheduled to have started by 29th day of October. What is the next thing for these students? Since resumption date has not been officially made known, one would have advised them to start the programme. But, who knows if after they have started the programme, they may be called back to write their exams in school. Wouldnt that amount to a waste of time? On the other hand, if they refuse to proceed on the programme, wont they be penalised by the school for not doing what they ought to have done, people may ask? Definately, No! Though, I have it on record that some students have been called upon by their would-be employers, but are divided on the opinion of wether or not to go for the programme now since they have not written their exams. To be on a safer side, I will advise all students who are to go for this programme to reach out to the school management or the Directorates of SIWES through their respective Departmental Association Excos or the SUG for possible solutions, and actions since no one can be so sure of Managements position on this issue considering its importance on the students academic life on campus.
