SL Army is now SLFP Army – Padukke August 6, 2013, 7:19 am By Zacki Jabbar The Sri Lanka Army had transformed itself into the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Army and was doing its dirty work, UNP Western Provincial Councillor, Niroshan Padukke said yesterday. He noted that the army had conducted a political contract for the SLFP in Weliweriya last week, by firing on villagers protesting against the authorities’ failure to prevent ground water contamination, as a result of harmful substances emitted by a factory situated in the area. The Provincial Councilor observed that the tragic loss of three young lives due to indiscriminate firing was reminiscent of Germany under Hitler. Instead of the Pradeshiya Sabha and Environment authorities jointly sorting out a local issue, bullets and tear gas were unleashed on people who were demonstrating against the denial of a basic right, Padukke said. Describing Military Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya’s claims that the army did not open fire and that a third party had been involved in the demonstration as childish, he called on the Brigadier to resign without insulting the army uniform.
