STORMY WATERS: Fishermen are rocking the boat with their angry response to State Government rules they say will ruin the industry. FISHERMEN have hooked into the State Government for trying to push through laws allowing Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson to change bag limits and revoke commercial licences at whim. Northern Rivers fishers will join a cavalcade of demonstrators outside NSW Parliament tomorrow to protest against government restrictions, which they say is sucking the life out of the industry. Ms Hodgkinson had tabled legislation changes in Parliament, only to pull them back off the agenda at the last minute on Thursday after pressure from the Australian Marine Alliance. AMA board member Dane Van Der Neut said the legislation introducing new boat limits on catches without consultation with the charter boat industry could destroy the industry. Mr Van Der Neut said fishers from all over the Northern Rivers were preparing for tomorrows protest, with thousands from across the state expected to attend. We want to send the message that we are actually people - were not just big trawlers out there catching fish, he said. We are families and we need the publics support because were not strong enough to do it on our own any more. There are only a thousand commercial fishermen left in NSW. Advertisement
