STRONG EARTHQUAKES HIT SOUTH OF VANUATU AND IN SUMATRA A strong earthquake of M 6.6-6.7 hit the region west of New Caledonia today but no damage or casualties were reported from this remote area. The quake occurred at a relatively deep epicenter. About 50,000 people could have felt the quake but this has not been reported. This is an unusual epicenter and it is likely it was triggered by geomagnetic effects related to the X1.3 solar flare of May 25 and the strong geomagnetic storm which occurred yesterday. The epicenter is about 10 degrees south of the local geomagnetic equator, a zone in which earthquake triggering related to ionospheric currents is thought to me maximized. As this epicenter was near the zone in which the solar eclipse was visible on April 29, tidal triggering is also a possibility. The other moderately large to large earthquake today occurred in the region of Sumatra (M 5.7-6.0), an area which was at local solar noon when the solar eclipse occurred. Like the earthquake near New Caledonia, this epicenter is also about 10 degrees south of the local geomagnetic equator, and geomagnetic effects from the strong geomagnetic storms of April 26 and May 1 could have helped trigger this earthquake as well. As noted in this the previous summary these were the two areas where seismicity was expected to see a large event at this time. Those notes in yesterdays summary read:earthquakesummary.info/
