SYNOPSIS: Happy Thursday! Heres a look at whats happening... ASIA: Clouds are increasing over the Korean Peninsula and Japan as the stationary front responsible for causing heavy rain and serious flooding in southern China moves eastward, providing wet weather for the weekend. Expect plenty of moisture for the weekend. Meanwhile, the front still controls the weather for southern China, though the rain is starting to weaken, but be aware of possible landslides and isolated heavy rainfall, leading to floooding. A low pressure system near the Philippines is developing, and it has the potential to become a tropical system by the weekend, adding moisture to the already water-logged country. A strong cold front is swinging through the northern portions of China and Mongolia, leading to a chance for light snow activity, but it is not expected to be a big winter weather maker. Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Nilofar continues to approach northwest India, and while it is weakening, it is expected to still provide rough surf, heavy rainfall, and strong winds. In Sri Lanka, the monsoonal setup for the southwestern portion of the country will lead to more rainfall, creating more problems for a region that has seen a deadly landslide this week. OCEANIA: A disturbance continues to progress eastward in the southern portions of Australia with some showers for southern portions of the Northern Territory. Expect minimal rainfall with mainly cloudy conditions for Southern Australia, but the rest of the country should remain pretty dry and sunny. New Zealand will continue to see rainfall and windy conditions for Friday as a system continues to roll through the area. EUROPE: High pressure continues to provide fair weather for central Europe into the Iberian Peninsula. That will continue to be the case as we head into the weekend. Meanwhile, a powerful low pressure system in the northern Atlantic is working its way onshore, and that will provide very wet and windy conditions. At times, heavy rainfall and flash flooding may be of concern for this region. The low pressure system down in the Balkan Peninsula will ever so slowly move eastward, leading to a possible drier weekend, but at least for Thursday and into Friday, unstable weather will lead to rain and brief downpours with strong gusts from time to time. NORTH AMERICA: A big cooldown is in store from people in the central United States to the US Deep South as we go through Thursday. A powerful cold front is about to clear the eastern coastline of the United States, so while sunny skies are expected to continue, expect highs to be much lower and lows in the chilly category. Some hard freezes are possible, especially for the northern regions. The US Pacific Northwest continues to deal with a slow-moving low pressure system that is coming onshore. Up to 100 mm of rain is possible further into the western mountains of the Pacific Northwest. The heat continues in southern California where residents are dealing with highs near 30C. This will continue for at least one more day before the air pattern setup changes, providing much better and cooler conditions. Hope you have a terrific Thursday wherever you are!
