Salvador del Mundo / Savior of the World School of Nabua 18th or 19th Century Nabua, Camarines Sur Molave wood. Height: 80 cm or 32 in. with base Provenance: Collection of Jose and Carolyn Savellano by descent. Collection of Dr. Porfirio J. and Mrs. Socorro Rodriguez Callo Purchased in Manila in the early 1980s An standing image of the Christ child in the posture of the Salvador del Mundo or Savior of the World. The Christ child is shown standing in a slight contrapposto posture with the right foot gently extended outward to support the frame. The Christ child holds a globe in the left hand while his right hand is upraised with his fingers help in a gesture of benediction. He stands on a squared base plinth typical of classically styled images of the late 18th century. His face is round with chubby cheeks. The hair is carved in tight, rounded curls similar to infant images made in Flanders. He wears a pair of abbreviated shorts or probably a lampin or diaper. He seems to be wearing some sort of footwear. Condition is excellent with loss to fingers of the right hand. A hole is present on the top of the orb which suggest that an ornament may have been placed here at one time (maybe a small cross) but now lost.
