Sam Harris is an incredible orator and I admire how he stays cool under pressure. I loved Letters to a Christian Nation But, I actually get where Ben Affleck is coming from as well and Ive seen some people jumping to be critical of what he said without giving it serious reflection, simply because he is daring to argue with one of the big so-called new atheist leaders or maybe its because hes disagreeing with Bill Maher who is a popular liberal leader. Im not sure which. The fact that Affleck gets hostile discredits him, but should not discredit his argument. I THINK hes trying to talk about: the fact that much of the aggression that american and the western powers receives from the radical Islam is generated by the fact that these powers have aggressive military campaigns operating in Islamic states. It is a self perpetuating pretext for continuing U.S. involvement in the middle east. It is not fair to equate people who call themselves muslims with jihadis any more than it is to compare christians to members of the westboro baptist church. Nor is it prudent to operate on the idea that every muslim follows the quran any more closely than your christian neighbor follows all the nasty bits in the old testament. Whether radical islam is on the rise, may or may not be the case considering the aforementioned western aggression. Perhaps western military intervention is breeding more of the dyed in the wool muslims than its killing. Perhaps thats the end-game: pushing this entire conflict as an us or them scenario with the wholesale domination of one culture over another. However, Affleck, bless his heat, fails to remain calm. (damnit jim, hes an terrible actor, why would he be expected to have some sort of control over his emotions?!) I do not think that their arguments are not at odds at their core. Harris is spot on about being critical of bad ideas, but calling it a liberals responsibility to help perpetuate anti-islam sentiment is something of a slippery slope. TL;DR The point being, getting excited and passionate about your arguments is a good thing, but your point might be lost in your eagerness to make it.
