San Jose: Police launch anti-truancy program after yearlong hiatus The San Jose Police Department is relaunching its anti-truancy program after a yearlong hiatus with the supplementary goal of curbing burglaries committed in the city during school hours. To that end, police have opened a processing center at PAL Stadium in East San Jose for their Truancy Abatement/Burglary Suppression (TABS) program. The last time the program was in place was the 2011-12 school year. Officer Albert Morales said one full-time officer will staff the processing center, and up to two officers will be working overtime shifts over the next month rounding up minors who should be in school. Police say history has shown daytime burglaries are often committed by kids who fit that bill, and truants caught by police will be either taken back to school or taken to the PAL Stadium location where they will released to the custody of their parents. The eventual aim is to expand the program to include eight officers, working on overtime shifts, throughout the city.
