Santa brings Sydneys third wettest Christmas day in 150 years Max Gonzalez, Friday December 26, 2014 - 11:49 EDT Santa brought a mixed bag on Christmas day when it comes to Sydney weather. As the old man was making his way along rooftops of Sydney homes depositing presents under the millions of Christmas trees, cloud and drizzle did somehow hampered his way. During the early hours of the morning, the cloud gradually burned off leading to a stunning sunny day for youngsters and oldies alike to play outdoors with their new toys. Unfortunately, showers and thunderstorms fired up over the western suburbs just after lunchtime, spreading towards the coast by about four in the afternoon. Ironically, the light show brought close to 8,000 lightning strikes across the city basin lightning it up just like a Christmas tree. On average, these storms brought 10-20mm of rain to the inner west and most southern suburbs. The highest totals were recorded to the north of the harbour with Mona Vale topping the Christmas charts at 47mm, followed by Avalon at 44mm and Hornsby with 40mm. The city itself managed to pick up 29mm of rain to 9am this morning making it the wettest Christmas day since 1942 and the third wettest in over 150 years of records. Earlier today, the residual patches of cloud from these storms burned off just as it did the day before. A southerly change marched over the Emerald City mid this morning, with winds likely to become gusty from about midday. These will arrive just in time as the firing of the cannon signals the start of the prestigious Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Winds are likely to gust to about 60-70km/h as the yachts turn the South Head. For those looking to play outdoors a bit more with their new toys, tomorrow will be cooler but mostly sunny. Cloud and showers will return on Sunday which could potentially be heavy, although the heaviest rainfall will be to the north of Sydney. - Weatherzone © Weatherzone 2014
