Saturday, 10 January 2015 Relatively quiet night for State Emergency Service but State Control Centre remains activated While it has been a relatively quiet night for the State Emergency Service (SES), its State Control Centre remains activated to respond to the further heavy rains expected in the north of the state over the weekend. Overnight, the SES responded to 15 calls for assistance from the South Australian public to 10.00am this morning. The callouts were mainly in the Adelaide metropolitan area and the Mount Lofty Ranges and involved fallen trees, minor flooding and roof and ceiling damage. SES Acting Chief Officer Dermot Barry said two Incident Management Teams, one in Port Pirie and the other in Adelaide, would also remain active. “With the support of our partner agencies such as the Bureau of Meteorology, the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources and the two fire agencies, we’ve already done a considerable amount of planning and preparatory work in respect to the severe weather currently impacting the state,” Mr Barry said. “We want to make sure we can still respond quickly and effectively should we be required to do so in the next few days,” he added. The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has issued s severe weather warning for heavy rainfall for the Flinders, Riverland, North East Pastoral and parts of the Mid North districts. It advises that the low near the northern border of South Australia is expected to move south today and tomorrow and be south of the South Australian coast on Monday. Rainfall totals of between 30-80mm are likely over the Flinders and North East Pastoral districts, with some falls of 80-150mm possible, particularly in central parts of the North East Pastoral district. This could lead to widespread flooding. Locations which may be affected include Marree, Hawker, Leigh Creek and Moomba. Falls of 20-40mm are possible elsewhere In the warning area. This may also lead to local flash flooding. Locations which may be affected include Clare, Jamestown and Renmark. During severe weather, the SES advises the following precautions: ensure loose items such as outdoor furniture, garden tools and children’s play equipment (such as trampolines and cubby houses) are put away or secured park vehicles undercover and well away from trees stay indoors and away from windows and skylights when weather conditions are severe stay away from fallen powerlines. Always assume fallen powerlines are live – they should be reported to SA Power Networks on 13 13 66 never walk, ride or drive through floodwaters shelter and secure pets and other animals, and check weather forecasts regularly and listen to a battery-powered radio for updates.
