Saturday happenings from ICU: a therapist from Georgia Lung was making rounds today and spent a long time with Susan Morton Leonard and me, just explaining lung stuff to us. She had tried this morning to get John to squeeze her hand, with no success, but this afternoon she got very excited because he did. This was the first time he has responded to that request. Well now, wait a minute...I turned to John and said, you just squeezed ANOTHER WOMANs hand? Youd better bring one home for me. And he did! For the first time in 10 days, my husband squeezed my hand and it wasnt faint but was a strong, firm grip. :) : ) :) Susan, the therapist and I got so excited that I guess John felt like the man for a minute because he tried to give us a thumbs up. In other news: the radiology MD report shows mild improvement in todays lung x-rays, fluid output remains good even though the lasix drip is now off, and numbers for respiratory improvement and readiness to try vent removal continue in the right direction. There is still some low grade fever and last reading was 99.8. The cultures being tested for infection show no growth as of now, and supposedly if its a bad infection, there would likely be indicators already showing though it can take 72 hours for confirmation. They are putting the picture together and will get on top of it if its infection. They also covered the whole room for anti-contamination and changed his central line, which went smoothly according to his night nurse, Ben. I just talked to him for a long time on the phone -- hes the one from Johnson City and the ETSU grad. I told him John had his ATV accident on our family property in Laurel Bloomery -- turns out, Ben knows that area so well because his wife lived there while attending Appalachian State, plus his mother lives in the nearby town of Mountain City. Theres something about having this East Tennessee boy taking care of OUR boy that makes the family feel better. :) I want to say thanks again for all the support. Just acknowledging these updates and letting us know youre with us means more than I can say. Special shout out to Bruce Boyd, who is in Atlanta this weekend for a wedding, and went to see John this morning. He prayed with him, talked about their Tennessee High football days, reminded John that he saw the Vikings through some tough Friday nights and told him he expects to see him at the class reunion later this year. I know, being in town briefly and for an event means time was limited, but that he made it a priority to see John means a great deal to all of us! Thanks again to everyone and please keep those prayers going up!
