Saw Woody Allen’s latest film yesterday, Blue Jasmine. If the only Woody Allen flick you have ever seen is Midnight In Paris and you’re expecting a repeat, forget it. Blue Jasmine, while billed as a comedy, is hardly a rollicking laugh-a-minute movie and you won’t leave feeling uplifted. But it’s one of Allen’s best IMHO and I’ve seen nearly all of them. The cast is of course excellent—Cate Blanchett, Alec Baldwin, Andrew Dice Clay, Bobby Cannavale, Sally Hawkins—but the big surprise for me was Peter Sarsgaard. I saw him recently in AMC’s The Killing where he played Ray Seward, bald and mostly evil. In Blue Jasmine he actually has hair and seems much younger as Dwight, an aspiring politician involved with Jasmine—I’ll stop because you should see the movie and experience the ending yourself. As with all of Allen’s movies, the music was wonderful. Lots of Billie Holiday. The setting is San Francisco but it’s not a travelogue. Blue Jasmine will hold your attention and make you think, or at least encourage you to. Your choice. Allen is no doubt currently working on his next venture. Can’t wait!
