Saw a small complaint or concern about someone paying $700 for an at home daycare service per month and how that was insane! As someone whos worked teaching day care, and oh yes it is teaching.... Id like to say: $700/month = a little over $30 a day to watch your child, help educated them (and yes even in just day care I still have to help educate them if Im teaching the 5 year olds to prep them for Kindergarten), help teach social graces, fine motor skills, feed them lunch and two snacks, perhaps even breakfast, clean them, potty train them,....and possibly watch them for upwards of twelve hours per day. And thats not just your child, thats a couple to a couple dozen more. And I have to make sure I follow some strict guidelines set up by Childrens Services such as making sure all sharp corners and edges of building structures are padded, that I have cots for each child to sleep on, that I have a state certificate in preparing food which I must pay for classes and pay for the test, plus required state sponsored mini classes, of which Im required to take up to 12 - 15 hrs bi annually and frequently an all day Saturday class that takes 5-6 hours to present to me, only gives me one to two hours credit - and I have to do that even if Im hosting/holding the child watching services - just five - eight children, in my own house! Let alone if Im operating/working at a day care facility. And the last time my friends hired a babysitter to watch their kid for a Saturday evening for about 3-4 hours, it cost them $35 and they had to front extra money to pay for dinner the kid and the baby sitter were eating. And if folks dont think were worth it....remember a childs personality is predominantly developed and set by age 5 (not unchangeable, but basically set) and if you drop them off at day care from the beginning that means they actually spend the bulk of their lives from birth to five with us, not you, remember theyre sleeping most of the time with you on the weekdays, especially if you have to leave them with us for the twelve hour period. Its evening pickup, home, dinner, and then bed for them and then in the morning, unless the have breakfast, its in the car and to day care. And with that in mind, depending on what kind of environment we give and show them, we have the ability to turn your kid into the next saint or train them to be the next Hitler. Are we worth something yet? And if the logic of Day Care isnt worth what people pay for it because were just babysitting.... then what does that also say about the jobs of stay at home mom or dad, because were doing want they cant do because they need to work. Reminds me of the parent I had who thought we were basically useless, wouldnt let me drive around the block, drive down the street, or even just sit in the parking lot in her new car because it was a valuable and expensive thing. And yet madam, you think absolutely nothing of leaving your child with me for twelve hours a day? Priorities and perspective, people.
