Saw the most amazing documentary on PBS called Right to Risk: A 15 Day Journey Through Arizonas Grand Canyon. They took 8 people with a variety of pretty severe disabilities on a river trip. It was so amazing and these people we would ignore as a society were able to experience everything from rapids to waterfalls to hiking because for once they werent told they couldnt. There was plenty of assistance but it makes me think. Why is it okay for society as a whole to discount a persons right to live, to experience, to see, to adventure just because theyre sick or disabled? This is why Im that mom dragging her child around the halls when he is inpatient, this is why I dont always participate in the sick kid events with Brendan even though the fact that he is chronically ill doesnt escape me. Brendan doesnt know hes really sick. I only hope that just once Brendan gets to do a river trip because hell love it as much as I do. Every sick and disabled child deserves the chance to do challenging things like this. Well done, PBS.
