Scabies is a skin disease typically caused by the burrowing of tiny mites into flesh. The mites are transmitted through skin-to-skin contact or sharing personal items like clothing or bedding. Infected children develop rashes on their hands, wrists, thighs, privates, waists, elbows, armpits and chest. Rashes develop on babies on their faces, the soles of their feet and their hands. The rash causes intense itching. Contact your healthcare provider or health department if you think your child has scabies – you will need prescription medication and instructions on how to disinfect infected items. Scabies is very contagious!
