Scholarships Available for JCC Health Information Technology Program Information Session to be held November 13 A partnership between Jefferson Community College (JCC) and the Fort Drum Regional Health Planning Organization will once again offer a health information technology (HIT) certificate training program. The HIT program, of interest to professionals in the healthcare and information technology fields, will be offered in January 2014. JCC will hold a mandatory information session for the HIT certificate training on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Room E-120 and again at 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Room E-118, Extended Learning Center. Health information technology makes it possible for health care providers to better manage patient care through secure use of electronically shared health information in place of paper medical records. As an increasing amount of physician practices and hospitals move toward the electronic health records (EHR) system, a growing amount of qualified HIT professionals are needed to assist hospitals and physicians as they move to adopt the EHR system. JCC’s HIT certificate training is an 8-month program based on a national curriculum model developed by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. Training consists of classroom and online learning, hands-on learning with an EHR system and an apprenticeship. Students will gain a working knowledge of health information management in an electronic environment and prepare to take two of three HIT certification exams designated for the role of implementation support specialist, technical/software support staff or implementation manager. Tuition costs $1250. Scholarships, in the amount of $750, are now available for qualified applicants. To learn more about JCC’s HIT certificate training program and scholarship eligibility, attend one of the information sessions on Wednesday, November 13 or call the JCC Continuing Education Division at 315-786-6591.
