School Shootings only account for 4% of all mass shootings each year. We tend to respond with political agendas – more gun control! No, we need more mental health workers and coverage! No, we need to teach men to respec women! Etc. But this article states another possible idea: Stop blaming any of these areas – school shootings are acts of terrorism caused by terrorists. As the article states: Imagine blaming lack of gun control and/or violent video games and/or misogyny as the reason why Bin Laden choose his path of destruction or why Dhokhar Tsarnaev put bombs at a marathon or why Timothy McVeigh planted bombs in the Oklahoma bombings, etc. School shootings work for terrorists because it makes us all so scared about random events, which we, as a people, overestimate how likely it could happen to us “next.” Because it is random because of the fact that the perpetrators are terrorists, we seek to comfort ourselves with finding a “reason” to blame so that we can try to control it and make us safer. No reasons to blame here. Blame the terrorists for their own actions. For example, the shootings by Elliot Rodger. He was “clean” and obtained his guns legally. He was mixed race, so not a race thing. While mad at women, killed more men than women and was indiscriminate in his killings in order to create more fear. He was in the care of several therapists and councilors, etc and was not being denied any care. And an FBI study on school shooters found school shootings are never a result of a crazy person “snapping.” Most shooters do have serious mental health or emotional issues, but they all plan their attacks months or even years in advance. Not saying that mental health is not part of the problem - but for those that say that their bad judgement calls came with sudden prescription changes or lack of coverage, etc. - the FBI (and many other investigators) are finding out that these people are planning for YEARS usually to make some kind of statement and are just waiting for the right timing - so premeditated. Ultimately, Rodger was just a terrorists, like many others. The article states a lot more. Interesting read.
