Searching through old scrapbooks and I came across a speech I gave as Pep Club co-chair (w/ Janet Potthoff). My bossiness and wordiness come through quite well, I think. :-) (Some things never change!): Tomorrow we will be dismissed at 11:30 to permit the student body of Roosevelt High School to attend the first game of the State Basketball Tournament. The game will be played at 3:15. Our pep section will be there as usual, but WITH YOUR SUPPORT itll be even more outstanding than it has been for any other game (INCLUDING Valley!) Janet and I are here to ask a lot on your part, but what is really very little. In support of your team and school, we ask that you wear blue and white to school. Many of you will plan on going straight to the Auditorium, so wear your uniform to school. But probably 50% of you will forget to bring your gloves to school, so youll either have to go home and get them -- and risk losing your seat -- or go without them and not be able to sit in the Pep Section. Which brings me to another point. If you have an extra pair of white or navy gloves, stick your name in them and bring them -- just in case there happens to be someone without them. But dont forget those gloves. Sophomores and juniors in dark (black or blue) gloves, white blouses, navy skirts, hose, and loafers. PLEASE -- NO KNEE-HIGHS. Seniors white gloves, navy skirt, white turtleneck top, blazer, hose, and either loafers or your blue cadet shoes. [oh, baby! remember those?] The officials of the tournament have informed us that we may not go on the floor. Its too bad, but theres nothing we can do about it. If you were at the Pella game last week, youll remember that we made our lines right outside the actual court, on the cement,, and made the tunnel to where the locker room is. Today well go down before the game before they come out for the SECOND time. Try to organize the lines quickly and smoothly, and get back to your seat with a minimum of confusion. Also, were going to try to keep the rows even. If we start out with ten in the front row (per section) then there will be ten people behind them, ten people behind THEM, and on back. Which brings us to another point. There has been much controversy over where the girls would sit and where the boys would sit. This is to clear it up: You will sit on the end where the basket is The white section is on the end, the blue (senior) section the most toward the middle. It is where the boys sat at the Pella game. The seating is all arranged now, and this is where the pep section will sit. The seats are good and you can see the whole game very well. So we dont want any more dissension between the boys and girls sections. Just go and sit down. If you havent yet purchased your ticket, you can get one at the Auditorium tomorrow. And if we should be so fortunate as ago win Wednesday, think ahead and bring your $2 to school Thursday for Friday afternoons game. And if -- WHEN -- we win Friday, Mr. Kephart tells me that tickets will be on sale Saturday here at the school for both the Consolation round Sat. afternoon or the Finals Sat. night. We have to be at that game, even one of us. And for the girls: theyre going to judge us by our pep section, not the girls who come with their boyfriends and sit somewhere else. Weve really got something to be proud of. PLEASE sit all together. Unify Roosevelt. Wear your Roosevelt blue and white. Let everyone know thats where were from. So when we surge on the floor Saturday night, overpowering those policemen, shouting Were Number One! and crying cuz were so happy we cant stand it … thats when Roosevelt is really on top. This is the year. This is the week. And tomorrow is the first day. Well see you there!
