Self Image and Self Love . . . Related to the post I just shared below about my friend Gabbis upcoming class the following came pouring out of my fingers . . . This is a shout out to my friends who are also all about loving our bodies, and or wanting to, moving in that direction. It is not about size, large or small, short or tall, thin or fat. We have so many ways that we judge ourselves. Weight is one of them. So is trying to control our environment through food, create an illusion of safety, attract or repel someone or something. We judge our hair color and texture, its length, how many freckles we have, the number of stretch marks we have, cellulite, and the scars, and dark circles under our eyes. We can choose something else. Explore loving ourselves, and in that process, taking care of ourselves, our bodies, minds and spirits in ways that support the physical vessel that houses our spirit. As we learn to love ourselves, embrace all of the beauty that is us, those other things fall into place. Eating food that nurtures, feedings ourselves another kind of food, emotional food. Emotional food comes in the form of fostering and embracing what is good for us is a good thing. That kind of food might look like taking a walk on our favorite part of the beach and letting the sand tickle our toes, or plunging our fingers into a spinning mass of clay on a pottery wheel, or perhaps it is a meal that we mindfully prepared for our physical vessels. One where we carefully picked out the healthiest looking greens from the produce shelf, the leanest cut of meat or fish, or the tastiest tofu, and our favorite dessert and ate each bite, each morsel with appreciate for the gift being given our bodies. That kind of self care, self love boosts our immune systems, ups our DHEA, reduces stress. Whereas if we went shopping with mindlessness and judged ourselves for everything we put in our cart, and what we should be buying, and then eating, overeating or starving ourselves, in the wake of that, we are creating cortisol, a stress hormone that can lead to many health challenges, and that can add physical weight to our bodies in the form of extra body fat around our middles, among other things. Which one do we choose. I vote for the former, mindfull shopping and eating to the best of my ability. I feel the difference. Discovering what we love, our core values, learning to manage our stress, embrace compassion and loving kindness these are all part of the kind of food I am talking about. It is possible. I know many women who are testaments to this self love, myself included. I had a period of time with an eating disorder and for me it was about me trying to control my environment. I did not much care for my body at the time either and that is still a daily opportunity when I look in the mirror to celebrate this amazing body that has in the past, and continues to, carry my wonderful self forward in all that I be and do. It is a daily opportunity. I have brother who was just diagnosed with colon cancer, stage 1, and I realized that it would be a good idea for me to get in and get a repeat colonoscopy. Guess what the first thing that came to my mind was??? Body image. . . All that I could think of for a few minutes as I contemplated calling my GI Doctor was Ugh!!! I have gained a few pounds since my last colonoscopy. Do I really want to shine my bottom for all to see? Really??? Well Im moving along now, nothing to see here, just move along. Its my health we are talking about for heavens sake. So you see, its a process. I choose love. Thats my peaceful revolution. How about you? How are you loving your bodies?
