September 12 – Fooled… Scripture Reading: Isaiah 29:1-30:18 / 2 Corinthians 12:11-21 / Psalm 107:1-9 “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.” This quote is remarkably true and is commonly attributed to President Abraham Lincoln. I guess if anyone would know about fooling people… it could be politicians. (joking) The truth is…there are those in the world who are masterly deceptive while others are innocent and gullible. But this quote needs an additional line… “You can’t fool God anytime.” It is amazing that people think God is oblivious about their personal lives. They believe God does not see, hear or know the details of their lives. Isaiah writes, “Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the Lord, who do their work in darkness and think, who sees us? Who will know?” (Isaiah 29:15) God speaks of Israel’s folly, their belief that God does not see their deeds done in the darkness. The omniscient God knows and sees all the ways of a man. Adam tried to hide from God and cover his nakedness. God called for Adam not because He did not know where Adam was hiding but called because Adam needed to confess his sin. Man was required to stand in judgment before their Creator. Even though Adam covered his body with fig leaves, he could not cover his sin. Isaiah expresses man’s foolish logic this way, “You turn things upside down as if the potter were thought to be like the clay! Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, “He did not make me?” Can the pot say of the potter, “He knows nothing?” Man acts like they are God and treat God like He is there for their beckoning. God is not the center of the universe…they are and everything revolves around them. God is not a puppet and He will not be mocked. His ways are higher than the ways of man and they are beyond man’s comprehension. There is no limit to His power, presence or purpose. Paul says that God has made foolish the wisdom of the world. God does this through the gospel, “we preach Christ crucified; a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called both Jews and Greeks, Christ the Power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1 Cor. 1:22) The devil thought he was the mastermind behind Christ’s crucifixion but Jesus willingly laid down His life for the purpose of redemption. Satan believed he was victorious but he was thoroughly and eternally defeated when Christ rose from the grave. Don’t be fooled by sin or satan…he is a deceiver and a loser. Place your trust in the wisdom and power of a God who does all things well. After all, He is the potter and we are the clay… He is in the business of creating masterpieces!
