September Poem Staying back The boat waiting under the overhang, its engine humming, the water splashing our group there to get on. I remain on the side worried that my cane will get caught between planks, tripping me into the water. No way for me to jump over into the boat as in years of youth past. I could crawl on all four to the vacillating vessel if only I could bend my reluctant knees... How grand I have lived this long. Mobility restrictions are more demanding as times goes on, they have too many rules, unacceptable but definite for safety. I will return to the townhouse to a vantage point on the balcony. It is the highest one over everything in sight. A perfect “vue imprenable”. From there, I will follow our party floating away, laughing at the smallest quip one can make among a happy gang, vanishing into the distance. Marcel Toussaint © 2013
