Serena was asked to make a family collage for preschool. In an attempt to remove bias, I provided an even mix of mom:dad and what I could of her dads relatives, and gave them to Serenas teacher and told her to let Serena choose. Its interesting to see which pictures didnt make the cut, but thats enough psychological testing on my kid for now. But this was incredibly informative concerning her dad. I asked him for family pictures (her dad, uncles, grandparents, siblings). He gave me two of the pictures of them together that I provided, and also several pictures of just Serena and Serena with the kids that his girlfriend babysits. He did not give me pictures of Serenas grandparents, her uncles, or even her little brother. It was also incredibly informative concerning me. I had to force myself to remove pictures of Serena with Mr. W and Blake from the lineup, despite her occasional daddy or dad slip and calling Blake her brother. And even pictures of Serena and derby. Just leaves me questioning what is family anyway? And if I dont know, I better just let her make up her own mind about it, too, rather than idealize some conventional family that doesnt exist for her.
