Several of you have shared sweet thoughts about my father, Rabbi - TopicsExpress

Several of you have shared sweet thoughts about my father, Rabbi Meyer Strassfeld. Sadly, we lost him this morning. He was 93. His last few years were hard ones, and he is now at peace. From the little I know, he passed quickly, and I have reason to believe that he suffered little at the end. One moment he was getting ready to attend morning services and just moments later he was gone. Thanks to all of you for the memories that you have shared of him in the past. He was born in what had just become Poland and is now Ukraine, grew up in Germany, from which his immediate family was mercifully expelled in 1935, and through great good fortune (and some finagling of the immigration system) found safe haven in the U.S. He loved this country greatly (to the point of winning third or fourth prize in a Readers Digest essay contest on What my Country Means to Me). Nevertheless, at times he was engaged in what a rabbinical colleague of his called, A Lovers Quarrel with My Country. He challenged us to live up to our best instincts and ideals. My father and mother cherished their time in Dorchester and Mattapan, and in the greater Boston area. Dorchester and Mattapan left their imprint on him, and I believe he reciprocated.
