Sharing a message with permission I received about the election. Thank you Stephen P. Gardner! On the eve of the election, I wanted to share a few thoughts on your tenure as Mayor. I have worked in local government as a city planner for ten years, and I have interacted with many elected officials. Few have worked as tirelessly and with as much dedication as you. Many of the defining projects that have shaped Glasgow over the last decade are a direct result of your leadership, the Plaza Theater and Liberty Street to name a few. More recently, you have balanced quality of life issues, infrastructure development, and public safety in a fiscally responsible way. You have initiated projects (i.e. the landfill methane recovery, the third fire station, the GATE sidewalks/trails) that are not only needed but showcase the City as progressive and forward-thinking. Businesses look for this type of “can do” attitude when deciding where to locate, and as many of these projects are predominantly grant funded, the impact to the tax payer is limited (in fact, I believe the methane recovery project is revenue positive). You have made economic development and job creation priorities. You have aggressively used incentives and spec buildings to address the short-term needs of businesses. At the same time, you have not lost sight on the long-term initiatives that create a dynamic community, thus attracting the workforce of tomorrow. I believe this election is critical. Warren County has reached a critical mass (in population, employment, and political influence) where its growth will be self-perpetuating, and its outward expansion will impact the adjoining counties (whether they like it or not). Glasgow must decide whether its wishes to cede influence (as merely a bedroom community) or be a contributor to the region (as an employment, retail, and cultural center). Leaders like you will ensure that it will be the latter. Good luck and God bless. Stephen Gardner.
