She looked at me for a moment and asked, “Why do Black kids walk that way? You know, swagger?” I paused for a moment before saying anything. My initial reaction was to give her one of my patent smarty-ass answers. Then I realized, for the first time, that she really trusted me. She would not have asked that question if she’d thought she risked insulting or angering me on a racially sensitive issue. It was an eye opener – she trusted me. She also wanted to understand. The question was, did I understand? I began carefully. “I think it is their safe, outward display of testosterone high and Black male pride.” She gave me a quizzical look. I could not leave it at that; I had to go all the way.
