Shogun update Checking in from our Monterey Bay - TopicsExpress

Shogun update Checking in from our Monterey Bay Aquarium/CICIMAR research collection trip. We apologize for our absence but weve had an extremely busy few days. Now onto what weve been up to... Saturday and Sunday were spent searching for dorado. We stopped on several bigger kelp patties and were lucky to collect 12 healthy specimen, which are currently living in our slammer. Theyve adapted well to the move and are already responding to feeding. All of this was done on our way south to our destination, Alijos Rocks. We arrived late last night, and anchored up to start what is the first data collection effort to take place here since 1990, and is to be the first of an ongoing 10 year study. The Alijos Rocks are a hot spot of an extremely diverse collection of pelagic species, which is why weve chosen it as the staging ground for this study, a collaboration between the Monterey Bay Aquarium and CICIMAR, located in La Paz, Mexico. Today starts off Day 1 of this phase of the data collection process in which were taking samples of a number of species in their early stages of life for study. To do this, were deploying a plankton surface net off the port side of the boat and towing it to collect samples at 16 different points. 8 of these are located in shore and the other 8, 5 nautical miles off shore, making a ring around them. In addition to these, we are recording 4 additional waypoints located 15 nautical miles off shore. The goal of this is to gauge the concentration of life in relation to physical proximity. Several photos attached of the surface plankton net. Weather permitting and 5 star galley productions -John O #shogunsportfishing #gonefishing #montereybayaquarium #CICIMAR
