Should Your Tax Dollars Go Into Subsidizing Low-Wage, Call Centre - TopicsExpress

Should Your Tax Dollars Go Into Subsidizing Low-Wage, Call Centre Jobs? It turns out that Ontario tax money is subsidizing a Bell call centre in Peterborough. Ontario government minister Brad Duguid announced the grant to Nordia, a Bell Canada Enterprises subsidiary that handles the company’s customer relations. If you’ve had a problem with your Bell service (and who hasnt?) and called to have your problem dealt with, you’ve likley talked to Nordia. The company has nine Canadian call centres, all in cities such as Nanaimo, Orillia and Sherbrooke. Peterborough will be the 10th. The grant to Bell is small - just $181,510. And you can’t fault Bell for taking the money if it’s on offer. But it’s not clear why we’re offering this money to a corporation that made $2.4 billion in profits in 2013. And its not clear why were paying for the creation of low wage, low skill jobs at a call centre.
