**Sierra Leone on my mind** THE WORLD IS WATCHING. ...... Extraordinary times require extraordinary measures. The Sierra Leone government was granted emergency powers through an act of parliament (the will of the people), to help deal with the greatest crisis our nation has ever faced. The exercise and execution of emergency powers is an awesome responsibility. Emergency powers are designed to assist a government in holding a society together, when faced with extraordinary challenges. The intended consequences of such extraordinary powers, should never be political, personal or giving rise to persecution and fear. The arrest and detention of any individual, using the aforementioned powers is troubling and problematic. We set a very high bar, when citizens (through their elected representatives) willingly set aside some of their freedoms, in order to provide our government with the necessary (emergency) powers to deal swiftly and expeditiously, with an extraordinary human catastrophe. There must be clear and compelling evidence that any individual detained using these powers, intended to incite public disorder, or that their actions prevented / inhibited the government in its efforts to maintain law and order. Even in extraordinary times, the burden of proof lies with the government. We are facing an extraordinary challenge, the world is watching and our nation has been severely tested. Our government has made mistakes (big and small), but redemption awaits a government focused on healing wounds and fostering unity. In our darkest hour, let the world remember the great human endeavour and sacrifices of our courageous citizens, and not the whispers of abuse of power and incompetence that haunts our government. SIERRA LEONE DESERVES BETTER! Let us honour all Ebolas victims with a shared (righteous) endeavour, and a determination to make our nation a healthier place to live...............
