Since theres been so much backlash against facebook, Ive been thinking a lot about why I and so many others have come to dislike it, and I think it mostly has to do with how we behave on here. I havent seen ads on facebook in like two years because of AdBlocker, so thats not really an issue. But I think we use social networks in a very antisocial way, which makes them worse, and so features that are meant to improve our experience actually make them worse. Most of the interactions we actually do on here are very passive [click like!] and most interactions beyond that lean towards the negative [commenting on posts and explaining why people shouldnt like the thing they genuinely like, for example]. Im certainly guilty of such behavior as well, but Ive decided to change the way I use this place. Part of that was unfollowing, like, hundreds of you [sorry], and all those places that generally only publish negative pieces that dont really add value to my understanding of a topic or my life [too many to name, really], and then just blocking content from sites that sort of fill me with strange amounts of rage [Buzzfeed, Upworthy, other list sites]. But, yeah, facebook is just a tool, like all social media. The way we choose to use it effects our relationship to the tool. While theres certainly a lot of other negative aspects of facebook [like spying and advertising and selling our information], Im not really convinced thats going to be different anywhere else [though tumblr appears to be pretty open about what they do, and pretty solidly focused on their users, and ello looks like its trying to be that as well]. Anyrate, thinking too much about facebook is probably a silly thing to do, but Ive been using this site for about eight years, which is longer than any other site I can think of, and since its meant to be a community, I guess I just want to be a better member of that community. Or something.
